Christian Dior model 2918, color 40, from the roaring eighties. This particular model was made in Austria by Optyl and is a rare example of limited edition sunglasses, not only from the eighties but in general eyewear history. In fact, each pair of shades model 2918 has its own production run number. Even the extremly limited Pierre Cardin “Evolution” model ST PC03 MV from ss2011, which was made in 100 copies (10 models per color for a total of 10 colors) was not numbered on the shades themselves and Pierre Cardin with Safilo did not want to limit them officially.
The specific one we have in our sunglassespreservation archive carries the production number: 0266
It is believed that there were a maximum of 1000 produced. We are still looking to see if there is any production number above 1000. Any information on this would be highly appreciated as well as the exact year of production of this model. Was it a part of a spring-summer or fall-winter collection and was it an haute couture resembling piece of eyewear?
All Austrian made Christian Dior sunglasses are very sturdy and mostly made of acetate. But this model is almost entirely made of golden metal with two logo engravings carrying the “CD” logos, one on the side of each temple. The round frames are interrupted in their structure by abstract metal curves behind which the lenses are interrupted.
The fascinating bit about these shades is the secret they behold behind the frames. In fact, on the back of the frames are two mother of pearl acetate circles resembling strongly bakelite from the thirties and fourties. We might even say it is fakelite, which was subsequently used after bakelite was no longer produced from the fifties onwards. The mother of pearl acetate circles are screwed to the golden metal frames by golden metal screws. The tips of the temples are also covered by mother of pearl effect plastic.
The production number is engraved in the right temple next to a printed Christian Dior logo while the left temple holds the printed version of the model number, color and calibre of the sunglasses.
These shades are masterfully executed and have a very sturdy heft to them. They are small and create a centralised look on the carrier creating a tight luxurious feel. Unfortunately Christian Dior has not made exceptional sunglasses like these for a long time. We hope new Dior models with interesting twists in design will soon start coming our way!
