Christian Dior mod 2918 sunglassespreservation 80s

Christian Dior model 2918, color 40, from the roaring eighties. This particular model was made in Austria by Optyl and is a rare example of limited edition sunglasses, not only from the eighties but in general eyewear history. In fact, each pair of shades model 2918 has its own production run number. Even the extremly limited Pierre Cardin “Evolution” model ST PC03 MV from ss2011, which was made in 100 copies (10 models per color for a total of 10 colors) was not numbered on the shades themselves and Pierre Cardin with Safilo did not want to limit them officially.

The specific one we have in our sunglassespreservation archive carries the production number: 0266

It is believed that there were a maximum of 1000 produced. We are still looking to see if there is any production number above 1000. Any information on this would be highly appreciated as well as the exact year of production of this model. Was it a part of a spring-summer or fall-winter collection and was it an haute couture resembling piece of eyewear?

All Austrian made Christian Dior sunglasses are very sturdy and mostly made of acetate. But this model is almost entirely made of golden metal with two logo engravings carrying the “CD” logos, one on the side of each temple. The round frames are interrupted in their structure by abstract metal curves behind which the lenses are interrupted.

The fascinating bit about these shades is the secret they behold behind the frames. In fact, on the back of the frames are two mother of pearl acetate circles resembling strongly bakelite from the thirties and fourties. We might even say it is fakelite, which was subsequently used after bakelite was no longer produced from the fifties onwards. The mother of pearl acetate circles are screwed to the golden metal frames by golden metal screws. The tips of the temples are also covered by mother of pearl effect plastic.

The production number is engraved in the right temple next to a printed Christian Dior logo while the left temple holds the printed version of the model number, color and calibre of the sunglasses.

These shades are masterfully executed and have a very sturdy heft to them. They are small and create a centralised look on the carrier creating a tight luxurious feel. Unfortunately Christian Dior has not made exceptional sunglasses like these for a long time. We hope new Dior models with interesting twists in design will soon start coming our way!

Dior mod monsieur 2024 11 Optyl 70s Germany sunglassespreservation

Christian Dior model 2024, color 11, Optyl made sunglasses were produced in Germany and were part of the “Monsieur” collection for men as stated on the inner side of the right temple. The shape of the frame is very 70′s and would appear dated if worn in 2012 but because of it’s typical 70′s properties, this model makes for a perfect example of design and color from that era.

Optyl made sunglasses, in “optyl” patented material, are very sturdy and have a special shiny glow to them, even today, over forty years after their production. They are oversized and tend to take away a bit of definition to the wearer’s face as they are rounded in every part of their structure. Even on a bigger, rounder face they still dominate fully and add even more roundness to any facial features.

The color used to fill the frames is a special mix of brown and green tones with hints of burgundy. The structure results almost alien like on camera as if they were covered with an anfibious skin or a streched frame from a celluloid shot from space travel sequences from “2001, a space odyssey”. In fact, the patern on the frame is almost psychedelic, reminiscent of acid trips from way back in the late sixties. The choice of color and paterns was very daring for Dior in those years.

The temples are made of the same material the frame is made of. Each temple has a “CD” logo in metal attached to them, in the font used in the 70′s for most Dior eyewear.

We wonder what were further thoughts that went into making this model and why certain choices were made. But we are glad that these shades were produced as they create a feeling of organic and/or biologic shapes put together through alien chemical processes to obtain one solid organic sun protector for the face… be it a human or an alien face…

Dior mod 2043 60 Optyl 70s Austria sunglassespreservation

Christian Dior model 2043, color 60 is a very innovative and avant-garde model not only for the seventies when it was produced! In fact, we believe these amazing shades to still be one of the more forward going and design-innovation pushing models ever produced. We say this considering that our criteria were the age of the sunglasses, the day to day wearability and symbiosis with any wearer’s face.

These shades were made in Austria in the seventies. They are built of Optyl and are still extremly sturdy about fourty years after their construction. The shine and intensity of the green are amazing. They seem made of glow-y organic slime, put elegantly together with mechanical looking black lacquered lines and frames.

The frame is molded out of one piece of Optyl plastic and the bridge appears to have undergone an oversized mutation and is now hovering above the lenses, only attached to them at the outer extremes, giving the impression of a legament or other sort of oganic tissue attached to other two organs (framed lenses).

The lenses are a beautiful faded blue and contrast elegantly to the green and black colors the frame and temples are made and colored with. Their shape is an interesting mix of both rounded and sharp cut corners and edges.

Each one of the two temples bares the metal “CD” logo on the outer front parts.

This is another example, together with model CD 2024 11 of Christian Dior’s and Optyl’s seventies futuristic alien vision. These sunglasses seem to be a result of an organic experiment mixed with elements of higher technology. The higher technology elements being in this case the black lacquered additions to the acid transparent green Optyl material.

After the exclusive contract between Christian Dior and America’s TURA eyewear manufacturer expired, a new material and brand hit the European market and with it took over the Dior license and that brand was OPTYL!

Optyl was a new material, very sturdy, easily moldable and extremly durable without drying out and discoloring. In fact, one of the reasons we have decided to include Dior model 2230 70 into the sunglassespreservation archives and collection is the fact that white colored artificial materials are the most delicate and the most damageable in time. Optyl sunglasses from the late sixties, seventies and eighties are still today (2012) durable and elastic! In fact, model Dior 2230 70, in our archives, is still perfectly white, lucid and elastic without any discoloration to the outside surface of the frame and temples. The inner part of these sunglasses was made of a transparent yellowish Optyl material and had been added a lucid white coating that has been perfectly preserved in time.

White is also a very typical color for the eighties as it is bold and daring because whoever wears it always becomes “larger than life” as white enlarges and expandes anything it covers as well as its surroundings! Truth be told: if black jeans make you look skinnier and white jeans thicker, you must know that the same rule applies for black and white sunglasses!

Dior Optyl shades were produced partially in Austria and partially in Germany. This particular model has been made in Germany as the stamp on the right inner temple states. The frame is made into a diamond shape making these sunglasses almost unwearable by anybody as diamond cut frames are the most difficult to fit any head and face shape. We are still looking for a person who these shades fit well. Nevertheless they are an ingenuous piece of design craftmanship as they stand alone, as a sculpture perfectly well.

The temples are also trimmed in a simil diamond cut mixed with a paper fold technique. The three dimensional feel to the trim of the temples adds a lot of depth when sun and light fall over these shades at a certain angle giving a sophisticated drammatic touch to the overall look of the sunglasses.

The temples don’t even have metal wires inserted within their core because Optyl doesn’t need added stability.

Christian Dior – Optyl sunglasses are always works of art and this model is no less impressive! These shades are made in Optyl patented material with a wooden pattern on the front of the frame and temples.

The lenses are framed with a golden metal screw frame which is attached to the plastic via screws in the nose area right under the bridge. This is clearly visible on the reverse side of the sunglasses because the back side does not carry the wooden pattern print and the plastic is yellowish transparent.

The Christian Dior “CD” logo is made of golden metal and is placed once on each outer front of the temples. The right temple carries the white Christian Dior inscription on it while the left temple carries the model number “2555″, color “47″ and the “made in Germany” inscriptions on the inner part.

These shades are sturdy but the wooden pttern print on top of the frame and temples is very fragile and tends to peel especially after so many years so the wearers should be very careful as to how they store the shades after use as rubbing it against any materials may result in damaging to the print.

These sunglasses were available in several colorways. In addition to the version we have in our sunglassespreservation archives we know of an extra black Optyl version.

Sunglassespreservation added these stunning oversized Chistian Dior by Optyl sunglasses to our collection but we unfortunately do not know their exact color code. If anybody has any more information on this model, please contact us as we wish to fill out the information for other sunglass passionates to see. Thank you.

What we do know about these shades is that they were produced somewhere in the seventies. Thanks to Vtg Shades and Grégoire, we were able to identifiy the model number to be D10 and that it probably belongs to one of Optyl for Dior’s earlier models, as the model number codes hadn’t yet switched to a four digit number. They are made of Optyl, very sturdy and light to wear. They measure almost 20 cm in length makinf them one of the largest Dior sunglasses ever produced.

The frame color fades from greenish yellow to brown green from top to bottom. The temples bare an interesting ornament pattern on them. They are reminiscent of 60′s space age. There is a metal, black painted “CD” logo attached to each one of the two front parts of the temples.

As soon as we find any further information relevant to these shades, we will update this post as well as all the data that goes with it.

All help would be very appriciated. Thank you.

Christian Dior made some of the most beautiful sunglasses during it’s brands design history between the sixties and the nineties. It still surprises us today from time to time but its biggest elegant and extravagant achievments were between those years mentioned above.

In fact, Christian Dior model CD 2037 belongs to the elegant niche. These sunglasses were made with a lot of attention to detail. The frame is Optyl made with an extra golden metal layer surrounding the mat black. The bridge is golden metal and the temples are made of golden metal and black opaque Optyl. The biggest detail are the Christian DIor “CD” logos, one on each nose pad.

This model was produced in Austria, as stated on the inner left side of the temple, while the right inner temple carries the Chrisitan DIor inscription and logo. The outer front sides of the temples bare the nineties “CD” logos on them.

The lenses are of a warn brown reddish shade, very comfortable to wear and see through.

All in all, Christian Dior model CD 2037 belongs to the family of oval round frame shapes which look very sophisticated and elegant on almost all face types.

this model was created in the time when Gianfranco Ferré was still working as head designer for the brand. In fact, even though Dior sunglasses are mostly a franchise product, not directly designed by head designers, we can clearly see the influence that the different head designers have on the end result of the sunglasses designs. This makes us understand the difference in style and overall appeal that Dior shades went through when Ferrè left the brand, leaving it in the hands of John Galliano and later on to Hedi Slimane for the male collections and today Raf Simons.

Christian Dior sunglasses have been produced in Optyl for a relatively long period of time in the late sixties, seventies and early eighties. The model you see here is a seventies example of Optyl and Dior. The shape is especially futuristic for the brand and th decade. The visor hybrid is bold and reminiscent of H.R. Gigers alien designs. We are working on restoring the original visor lense as it has been replaced throughout the decades with a double cut lense.

The temples are very short because the frame is extremly long and bent on the sides creating an elongation of the wearer’s face.

The frame itself is very organic and high tech looking. There are two Chrisitan Dior logos, one on each outter side of the temples.

Christian Dior model 2004 is a beautiful example of pure seventies style. The Optyl used for these shades is opaque, giving them a frosted glass-y feel and finish. Dior is groundbraking when it comes to his licensed sunglasses from from any era till the late eighties but the seventies take the cake as they show us some of the most experimental and futuristic designs that can easily be compared to SIlhouette’s iconic FUTURA collection!

Christian DIor model 2004 has an oversized square frame in pale brown/beige Optyl. The frame curves on the left and right borders as it overflows into the temples which are screwed to the frame as if interlocked within one another.

The temples are also in an opaque pale brown/beige baring a silver metal colored “CD” logo each on the front extreme outter sides. The left inner temple bares the Optyl logo while the right inner one the Christian Dior logo printed in white.

These sunglasses frame the wearer’s face to perfection, creating an alien/robotic vibe that the seventies so often, so masterfully did!

Christian Dior is known especially umong vintage sunglasses collectors as one of the most experimental and innovative design brands when it comes to futuristic shapes, colors and materials.

In fact, model 2006 from the seventies is a perfect example of visionary spaceage design!

These sunglasses were made in Optyl, in Germany. They are colored in red fading acid yellow by passing through a touch of orange and just a hint of green.

The frame is a brilliant example of spaceage design as the temples almost robotically extend from the top sides of the frame, leaving a thin slit between the two. The temples then proceed straight till the ear where they then bend in an organic curve.

These shades were available in several color combinations and all had two “CD” logos, one on each outter front side of the temples. The inner right temple bares the Christian Dior inscription printed in white. The actual model number is pressed into the inner top right side of the frame.

The bridge is set very low to allow the frame to better reflect a hexagonal shape.
